You must be as eager as we are to get new pieces and update your wardrobe for next season. But make sure you do it with an eye on the trends we’ll be wearing at the end of 2022 and in 2023. Of course, with so many Fashion Weeks to keep up with, it can be daunting to go over all the runway shows, so we did the heavy lifting for you and spotted the major AW22 trends from Paris, Milan, New York and London. We hand-picked wearable and timeless trends for your between-season dressing and next fall/winter. And because we believe in buying less but buying better, we chose looks with staying power. In other words, outfits and trends that you will enjoy for several years.
Leather and faux-leather, a fall/winter staple
As we saw in many designer collections, leather is a significant trend next season. For example, Gabriela Hearst’s AW22 runway went around the theme of rewilding with faux-leather pieces. Likewise, Isabel Marant sent models down the runway in leather layering and overalls. After Daniel Lee stepped down, Matthieu Blazy’s debut collection for Bottega Veneta also showed statement leather pieces, as did Roberto Cavalli and Fendi. Khaite went for slouchy two pieces in leather and Gabriela Hearst, leather dresses embellished with Broderie Anglaise panels.
Extremely oversized jackets
Isabel Marant’s desire to focus on essentials led her to present oversized jackets over little dresses in a Y2K-inspired simple, and comfortable way. We also saw oversized jackets worn with extra-wide-leg jeans at Khaite, another hot trend for 2022. No matter whether blazer, biker or bomber jacket, as long as it’s XXXL.
Polished layering
Although layering is usually linked to cool street style looks, the layering trend for AW22 that arose from the runways at Fashion Weeks is more polished. The Danish designer Cecilie Bahnsen, who debuted at Paris Fashion Week, styled dresses over trousers, creating elevated and luxurious outfits. In the same vein, Nanushka layered wrap skirts over leather blazers or trousers, and Molly Goddard based her collection on the Portobello Market in the late ’80s ad 90s, layering dresses over t-shirts and pants.
Minimalist suiting
Classic tailoring and power suits with sleek pieces were on several runways at Fashion Week AW22, bringing the cool minimalism trend to androgynous looks. For instance, Yves Saint Laurent’s elegant smoking and Gabriela Hearst’s double-breasted suits. Likewise, Tod’s, Proenza Schouler, and Versace created toned-down tailoring for next fall and winter.
Elegance with a subversive athletic vibe
Alessandro Michele combined elegant suiting with athletic-looking garments in Gucci x Adidas’ much-awaited collab. In the same vein, David Koma’s AW22 runway collection was inspired by Britain’s favourite sports; rugby and football. The designer paired sculptural taffeta dresses with over-the-knee striped socks or boots.
80’s power dressing
The Italian Dolce & Gabbana brought the ’80s trends back with sculptural silhouettes on the Fashion Week AW22 runway. They presented, for example, jackets with statement shoulders paired with leggings. Power shoulders were also a theme for Prada’s trench coats, Etro’s blazers, and Versace’s outwear.
1930s avant-garde and glamour
Erdem found inspiration in the Avant-Garde fringe culture from the early ’30s, for example, women’s looks in underground clubs in Vienna, Berlin or Paris. In other words, the 1930’s glamour is a fab AW22 trend from Fashion Week catwalks for those who, like us, can’t wait to dress up again. Vintage opulence also inspired Rixo, Versace, Roberto Cavalli, and 16Arlington, which showed shimmering sequins and fluid crystal embellishments.
Cut-outs are still on-trend
The cut-out trend will still be a thing in AW22,-23, as we saw on the runways of Christopher Kane, Supriya Lele, Michael Kors, and Roberto Cavalli. Additionally, sexy cut-outs were also a trend at LaQuan Smith and Nensi Dojaka, who won the LVMH Prize and BFC Foundation Award last year.
The simplicity of tank tops
In the best high/low trend, luxury designers combined simple tank tops with skirts and trousers at Fashion Week AW22. Prada and Bottega Veneta chose minimalist tanks in white and baby blue, while Etro’s tops came in black satin and Diesel’s in printed ribbed cotton.
Futuristic shimmering and metallic fabrics
We spotted on the AW22 runways the space travel trend, shimmering looks at 16 Arlington, and a metallic silver dress and cape with a futuristic Red Riding Hood vibe at Alberta Ferretti.
The longevity of the puffer trend
Oversized and cosy puffers will still be around for next fall and winter. We saw the trend on most runways at Milan Fashion Week AW22-23, from Prada and Jil Sander to Giorgio Armani and Versace; giant parkas were everywhere.
Micro skirts for fall and winter
Despite the fall and winter cold, young fashionistas will be wearing shorter-than-ever mini skirts. We spotted the micro skirt trend from S/S22 during Fashion Week AW22-23 at Versace, Roberto Cavalli, Gucci, and Diesel’s runway shows.
