Next in fashion
As we already told you, Next in Fashion is the Netflix series to watch now. Presented by the adorable It-girl and designer Alexa Chung and Tan France, it is a reality competition for fashion designers. What we liked about it is that the competitors are not beginners; they’re all well established in different parts of the world. In each episode, they are challenged to create looks that go from red carpet gowns to street style and lingerie. Needless to say, the results are quite stunning!
Alexander McQueen
The fantastic documentary shows home videos and footages of Alexander McQueen‘s life. You can see the behind-the-scenes of his controversial and at the same time, mesmerizing fashion shows. It also shows interviews with McQueen’s family members, including his mother, friends and collaborators. Among them, Vogue’s editor Isabella Blow, who recognized his genius calling him the „Yves Saint Laurent of the 21st century“.
Jeremy Scott: The People’s Designer
A documentary about Jeremy Scott’s journey. It recounts his struggles, from the humble beginning growing up in a farm in Missouri to becoming Creative Director of Moschino. The designer says he wants his “clothes to live, to party, to have fun“. According to famous fans like Rita Ora, Kate Perry, Kayne West, Rihanna and Miley Cyrus, that’s exactly what they do.
Sex in the City
After the huge success of the series, twenty years ago, came the Netflix movies. Starring Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw, the series and movies are about four New Yorkers who gossip about their lives while looking fab in incredible outfits. Costume designer Patricia Field won several awards for her work on Sex in the City. Each outfit is great. From the now-iconic white tutu skirt to the fabulous Vivienne Westwood wedding dress Carrie wears. Without forgetting, of course, the Manolo shoes that Carrie helped become famous. Sex in the City is a feast for the eyes of fashion lovers.
The assassination of Gianni Versace
The nine-episode series received the most nominations at the Emmy Awards. It has great performances from the actors, including Penelope Cruz as Donatella Versace and Ricky Martin. The family of the designer claims the series “is full of gossip and speculations“. But it shows accurately the flamboyant fashion style of Versace and those around him in the ’90s.
The costume department sourced vintage shops, eBay and Esty to find the right clothes for the actors. But they also re-created looks, including 20 pieces Versace’s final show. In order to do this, they researched the Versace Menswear Archive at the FIDM Museum & Galleries in L.A.
Halston
Ewan McGregor plays the Iowa-born, Indiana-raised Roy Halston Frowick in the 5-episode Netflix series “Halston”. The miniseries recounts the rise and fall of the designer who changed and defined American fashion. Additionally, the documentary on Amazon Prime shows archive interviews with Halston’s friends and collaborators. Among them, Liza Minnelli, Andy Warhol, and Jacqueline Kennedy, who famously wore a Halston pillbox hat to President J.F. Kennedy’s Inauguration in 1961.
Breakfast at Tiffany
The 1961-classic starring Audrey Hepburn is a must for anyone who loves fashion. Holly Golightly in a black Givenchy dress, dark sunglasses and fabulous pearls has turned the LBD into the number one staple of chic girls and women around the world. Costume designer Edith Head and the French designer Hubert de Givenchy created the fantastic looks that make this film unmissable.
Franca: Chaos and Creation
Know more about Franca Sozzani, the woman who broke taboos during her almost 30 years as Italian Vogue’s editor-in-chief. Her son, Francesco Carrozzini narrate the documentary. It presents the incredibly chic editor who wanted fashion magazines to talk about what is happening in the world. With the controversial covers she created for Vogue until her death in 2016, Franca tackled essential issues like domestic violence.
Maddman
Get to know the story of the shoe designer and entrepreneur Steve Madden‘s unconventional path to success. Watch him rise and fall, and rise again. The designer went prison because of stock manipulation with the “Wolf of Wallstreet”. But the film also shows how Madden rebuilt his life after jail. He sobered up, got married and became a father of three. Additionally, he went back to making affordable shoes similar to the ones we see on the runway. Only one year after his release, Steve Madden was named “Company of the Year”. Cardi B said Madden makes trendy shoes that don’t break the bank, although some complain they are knockoffs.
Bra Wars
The film about a small Scottish bra company gives you an insight look at the story of the bra. The evolution of underwear reflects the social changes throughout time. Historians, designers and celebrities talk about this tiny piece of clothing that moves a multi-billion industry. You’ll see how small niche companies compete against giants. And you’ll discover how to achieve the perfect fit with Rigby and Peller, the suppliers to the Queen.
Girlboss
The series is based on Sophia Amoruso’s autobiography. It tells how Sophia created her vintage clothing online shop, which became a big success. After being fired from her job in San Francisco, Sophia buys a jacket in a second-hand shop for 9 dollars. When she manages to sell it on eBay for 600 dollars, she discovers what to do next. This is the beginning of the “Nasty Gal” shop that made her a fortune by the age of 28. Sadly, she has since filed for bankruptcy.
The true cost
Now, more than ever, you should watch The True Cost, an eye-opening documentary about the fast fashion industry. See the impact the business of fast fashion has on the environment and lives of people who make them. Be prepared to be shocked. You’ll see what happens in third-world countries, including the disasters in Indian factories so that we can buy cheap clothes.
