Although the Viennese cuisine is famous for its Wienerschnitzel and other meat dishes, there are many delicious vegetarian and vegan restaurants in Vienna.
And because there are so many options, you can get a bit lost. So we selected the best vegetarian restaurants to help you quench your craving for a healthy snack or a hearty plant-based meal in the Austrian capital. Our top 7 vegetarian restaurants are so good, even die-hard-meat-lovers will enjoy them!
Hollerei
Our first choice is the cosy Hollerei, a vegetarian and vegan restaurant with an Asian and Mediterranean-inspired menu that changes weekly, using seasonal ingredients. The wooden interior gives a warm atmosphere to the restaurant and in summer, you can enjoy your meals in the beautiful garden. Besides the delicious food that will make you forget you’ve ever liked meat, Hollerei also offers vegetarian cooking classes, so that you can recreate the restaurant’s dishes at home. And there’s more; the Hollerei Gallery, just across the restaurant, shows “Emerging Art for Emerging Collectors”. You can purchase works from the selected artist as well as experience exclusive art dinners in the exhibition rooms. Hollerei restaurant and Gallery are located just outside the city centre, in the 15th district, easily reachable by public transportation.

Tian
This elegant restaurant for vegans and vegetarians will surprise you with unexpected dishes and flavours. It is the only vegetarian restaurant in Austria that has been awarded one Michelin star and three Gault-Millau toques. You’ll be able to choose between four, six or eight-course menus, all carefully prepared with ingredients from its own garden. By the way, Tian is Chinese for heaven, which is precisely where you’ll think you are while you enjoy a wonderful meal there.

In-Dish
In-Dish is the place to go if you’re looking for a progressive Indian cuisine. Although it’s not a vegetarian restaurant per se, there’s plenty of vegetarian and vegan dishes to choose from in the menu. The decor is modern and the service is so cordial you’ll feel you’re having dinner at your friend’s place. Do not miss their vegan Biryani and the Gulabjam cheesecake!

Harvest Bistrot
The vegetarian bistro offers “slow food served quickly”. Located in front of the trendy Karmelitermarkt, Harvest Bistrot serves a very good breakfast until noon, and then, a buffet and a la carte menu with plenty of vegan options. With good weather, you can sit outside and enjoy the view of the cute Karmelitermarkt. The only downside is that on weekends, the restaurant closes at 6 pm.

Swing Kitchen
Pioneers in vegan cuisine in Austria, Charly Schillinger and his wife Irene opened the Swing Kitchen to bring delicious fast food that is not only vegan but also environmentally-friendly. The delicious burgers and wraps are mostly made with regional products and come served in bio-degradable ware. My daughter and friends love this small chain eaterie with an industrial design and cool swing music. There are Swing Kitchen restaurants in several locations in Vienna.
