Virgin has just completed the first fully crewed spaceflight with the company’s founder Richard Branson on board, beating Jeff Bezos in the tight spacial race. And our eyes were on the space tourism spacesuits to wear in the rocket, certainly a fashion inspiration and trend not only for space geeks but also for fashionistas.
In fact, I met two young women who didn’t know each other a few days ago at a dinner party. Coincidentally, they had both applied to a contest to win a seat in the first tourism flight to the edge of space. Unfortunately, they didn’t win, but our conversation got me thinking about space tourism, Toy Story’s Buzz Lightyear, and the futuristic Barbarella as fashion inspiration. Keep reading to find out more about what to wear in space or on earth if you are inspired by the transformative Age of Aquarius, zero gravity, the stars, and the moon.
The first spacewear collection
Under Armor designed the spacewear collection for Virgin Galatic, which is deemed the first collection created specifically for private astronauts. It includes a limited edition jacket, a training suit, a spacesuit, and the right shoes to wear while floating weightless in zero-gravity space tourism.
Space fashion in the ‘50s and ‘60s
Before we could even dream of space tourism, fashion already found inspiration in sci-fiction characters from movies like Metropolis in the ‘20s, Flash Gordon in the ’30s, and Star Trek. However, if you weren’t born light years ago, you probably don’t remember Barbarella. The sci-fi movie starred Jane Fonda wearing fantastic futuristic looks created by fashion designer Paco Rabanne in 1968.
Courrèges and Pierre Cardin also explored new materials and silhouettes that reflected the space fever of the ‘60s; clean lines, metallic fabrics, and silver boots. And today, space fever is hotter than ever. More than 600 people have already reserved tickets to travel to space with Virgin Galactic. This includes celebrities like Justin Bieber, Tom Hanks, Lady Gaga and Leonardo DiCaprio.
